Wacky Furniture Care
Wooden furniture becomes dull and lifeless over
time. Bamboo furniture starts to fade with age. Sofas become dirty
and need expensive dry-cleaning to survive. Here are some simple
home tricks to ensure that that furniture keeps looking new and
shiny and lives a little longer before requiring an expensive
makeover.
Sofas with a fabric cover get dirty over time.
Regular vacuuming does help in removing most surface dirt but some
deep seated dust and dust mites just won't go easily. These mites
can be a source of major problem for people suffering from
asthma or
allergic rhinitis also. To remove this deep seated dust, put an
old bed sheet in hot water and wring out. Keep this almost dry but
slightly hot and wet sheet over the sofa and beat over with a stick.
The dust will come out of the sofa and stick to the sheet. Remove
the sheet, rinse again in hot water and repeat, till you are
satisfied.
Looking to varnish that wooden furniture but
don't have access to the specialized service? Don't worry. Here is a
simple solution. Prepare a solution of 500 ml of water mixed with
100 ml of mustard oil. Take a piece of clean muslin cloth, soak it
in the mixture and rub over the wooden furniture to find that
varnished effect!
If your polished wooden furniture is stained try
this fix. Add two tablespoonful of white vinegar to half a liter
(500 ml) of warm water. Dip a piece of soft clean cloth in this
mixture and rub the stains off. This is particularly useful for
removing oil stains of all kinds.
You can get a shine on your wooden furniture by
applying a mixture of cigarette ash and water with a clean cloth on
it. Rub it off to find a sheen on the wood. However, you may
find a tobacco smell pervading the room. This is an
occupational hazard with this home tip.
Cane furniture can be polished with a little
kerosene. Dip a muslin cloth in a little kerosene and rub the
furniture down to get a clean shiny look. The kerosene smell may
take a little time to go, so be ready to air the furniture after
using this tip.
