Wacky Wood Care and Scratch Removal
Wooden furniture looks good. Wooden floors look
even better. Normal care with waxing and buffing regularly keeps the
wood looking shiny and smart. However regular usage leads to
scratches and some times, deep gouges which spoil the look and feel
of the wood. There are a few wacky and simple ways to restore this
wood costing very little and you can do it easily at home with
products, which may be already available at home.
Two home products work easily with wood - Coffee
and Shoe Polish.
For scratches, simply find a matching (wax based,
paste) shoe polish (not the liquid) and rub it over the scratch with
a clean cloth. Blend it into the scratch and buff it well, so that
the wood looks even and clean. Job done.
You can also use coffee for these kind of
scratches. Blend (instant) coffee powder with a little water
to get the desired (wood) color matching and then rub the mixture
into the scratch with a cotton ball. The scratches will vanish.
Water stains on wood look bad and leave white
spots. You can get rid of them by using the coffee method described
above.
Deeper gouges require filling before you can shoe
polish or coffee color them. To fill a gouge, try using wooden
filings mixed with a glue (or thin cotton fiber, if wooden shavings
are unavailable), and let it set. Then try some coffee powder or
shoe polish on it ( as described above). After this dries,
apply multiple layers of clear nail polish , allowing each
application to dry before proceeding further. Then re apply, shoe
polish / coffee to blend the area with the rest of the wood.
This should do the job.
If the gouge is not too deep, you can forget the
filling and move to applying clear nail polish on the gouge. Apply
multiple layers, allowing each layer to dry first. and the nail
polish will fill up the gouge. The wood will show through the
polish, giving a nice wooden look.
