Natural Jewellery Cleaning Solutions
Buying a piece of jewellery may be an impulsive or a
well thought out decision. However keeping it clean is another matter.
Dust, grime and pollution can cheapen and spoil the look of expensive
jewellery. it is also important to keep the pieces clean for hygiene
reasons as they remain so close to the body.
Going to your local jeweller to get your jewellery
cleaned is time consuming, a little risky without proper insurance and
quite expensive.
We have collected some easy solutions to keep your
jewels looking new and attractive. We have solutions to clean pearls,
diamonds, gold, imitation jewellery, silver and more. Most are easy to
do and very cost effective.
Diamonds
If your diamonds have lost their luster, they need
cleaning. Rub a piece of blackboard chalk over them and then wipe
clean with a soft dry cloth.
You may also try soaking your diamond earrings and
rings in a little water for 10 minutes or so. Then add some
washing detergent powder ( a pinch) and bring the water to a boil.
Leave for five to ten minutes and watch your diamonds sparkle.
Gold Jewellery
To clean gold ornaments boil them in water with a
pinch of
soda bicarb ( baking soda) and a pinch of turmeric powder. Boil for
5- 6 minutes and see them regain their shine and luster.
Silver Ornaments
If your silver articles and pieces have turned black
due to oxidization, immerse them for half an hour in warm water to which
a little soda bicarbonate has been added. They will start to sparkle as
new.
To prevent oxidization, store silver ornaments in a
box along with camphor. Replace camphor as it slowly evaporates.
An easy to find silver polish at home is the white
toothpaste ( not the gels). Rub this white toothpaste with a clean cloth
on the silver ornaments and see them shine.
Gold Plated Ornaments
These can be cleaned with pumpkin juice. Rub your
ornaments with a cloth dipped in pumpkin juice.
Pearls
Pearls can be cleaned with a cloth dipped in the juice
of a white pumpkin. Watch your pearls glow again.
Semi Precious / Precious stones.
Stones and beads may be cleaned with a soft toothbrush dipped in
dry baking soda. Brush the beads gently and then rub with a soft cloth
to get the shine back.
To clean jewellery made from these stones, hold the
item over a steam source. Hold for 2- 3 minutes and then rub with a
clean white soft cloth. The steam will loosen the dirt and grime
and then you can easily remove it.
Imitation Costume Jewellery
Prevent this kind of jewellery from turning black by
applying a colorless nail varnish over them. This will prevent
oxidization and preserve the colors.
