Clean and Shine that Leather (continued..)
Leather can be stained and lose its luster over
time. Here are some more home tips to get that leather clean. Do
remember to check if the item you are cleaning is real leather first
..before you try these wacky tips. Many articles are currently made
with imitation leather and require different care. Any cleaning tip
should be first used on a small discreet area of the leather
object, to check, and confirm that it does not harm the
product, before proceeding further.
Blood stains are particularly difficult to get
off leather objects. A dried in, blood stain may actually require
professional care and even then, may not get completely removed.
Catch a blood stain early before it seeps into leather and blot as
much away as possible with paper towels. Then prepare a soapy
solution with detergent and water and pour on the stain. Let it act
on the stain for five to ten minutes and then rub away vigorously
drying up the leather. Repeat to get better results. Modern
detergents contain enzymes which help break away the blood stain.
However too much water is bad for leather so you need to dry it
completely after the process is completed. If the stain still does
not go away completely, try to hide it underneath some polish.
Many people use Saddle soap to clean leather. I
recommend NOT using this product as it seems to fix and spread
stains instead of cleaning it.
Water can spot leather. To remove these stains,
put a few drops of white vinegar on a clean piece of cloth and dab
it on the stain. Wait for a couple of minutes and then rub and buff
away the stains. Don't let vinegar stand on the leather, after
cleaning it, as it can wear it away. Remove all residue with a clean
piece of cloth.
Ink spots on leather can also be irritating and
difficult to get out, as they seep into the leather. Spray the ink
spot with a little hair spray. This will help loosen the ink. Then
use a mixture of white vinegar and water to rub and buff away
the stain. Do remember to clean away all residue.
